Taoyuan’s stories were brought to the public through sound. The Department of Chinese Linguistics and Literature at Yuan Ze University collaborated with Good News Radio to produce the “Reading Taoyuan” series, which has been broadcast since September in the program segment “Love on the Journey.”
The program was hosted by Golden Bell Award-winning radio host Wei-Jen Li. It featured four faculty members from the department, who guided listeners in exploring the city’s culture from the perspectives of history, architecture, literature, and ethnic languages.
The program covered a wide range of topics. Shu Yan introduced the history of Longgang’s rice noodle culture, the Yiwei War of Resistance against Japan, and the Black Cat Squadron; Chih-Ming Huang showcased how architecture served as a cultural carrier through examples such as the Confucius Temple, the Martyrs’ Shrine, and old street woodworking settlements; Department Chair Shih-Hui Hung discussed novels adapted into films such as The Everlasting Glory and The Dull-Ice Flower, along with Zhongli’s century-old literary society Yi Wen Yin She and works by female poet Fang-Ge Du Pan, highlighting Taoyuan’s literary character. Fu-Mei Hsu focused on the Li Teng-Fang Historic House in Daxi, the Fan-Jiang Old House in Xinwu, and Yong’an Fishing Harbor, revealing the multicultural features of Zhao’an Hakka, Xinwu Hailu Hakka, and coastal Hakka communities.
During the program, Wei-Jen Li remarked that there were still many untold stories in Taoyuan and encouraged listeners to follow “Reading Taoyuan” to encounter the soul of the city through the steps of travel.
Department Chair Shih-Hui Hung stated that this collaboration not only reflected the department’s commitment to interdisciplinary humanities education and care for local culture but also echoed Good News Radio’s mission of long-term community engagement and spreading warmth. She pointed out that Taoyuan was an inclusive city, and the department hoped to share its stories with the public through the program, thereby deepening its sense of social responsibility.
“Reading Taoyuan” had been broadcast every Wednesday since September in the “Love on the Journey” segment of Good News Radio and was also available on the station’s website and podcast platforms, enabling listeners to embark on a deep journey of the heart and land anytime and anywhere.
