To help high school students gain an early understanding of healthcare professions and explore future academic and career paths, the School of Nursing at Yuan Ze University joined forces with the Department of Medical Education and the Department of Nursing at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital to organize a Healthcare Career Experience Camp. Drawing on the interdisciplinary strengths of the College of Medicine and Nursing, the program introduced students to real-world healthcare settings through smart ward tours, hands-on clinical training, and career-sharing sessions, offering an in-depth look at the evolving role of nursing in the age of smart healthcare.
The camp was held at the Clinical Skills Center of Far Eastern Memorial Hospital under the theme “Welcome to Far Eastern.” Activities included an introduction to the hospital environment, guided tours of smart wards and outpatient units, clinical skills workshops, and career discussions with healthcare professionals. Through these carefully designed experiences, participants developed a comprehensive understanding of nursing, from patient care and clinical practice to future career opportunities.
The event opened with remarks by Yun Chen, M.D., Vice Superintendent for Medical Education at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital and Dean, College of Medicine and Nursing, Yuan Ze University. She encouraged students to remain curious and to learn through observation and hands-on experience, emphasizing both the professionalism of healthcare work and the importance of teamwork. A nursing supervisor then introduced the hospital’s care model and guided participants through smart wards, neurology wards, neurosurgery wards, and outpatient units, where they observed how nurses delivered patient care and how smart technologies supported clinical practice.
Throughout the visits, students explored digital healthcare systems, vital-sign monitoring technologies, patient safety management practices, and interdisciplinary collaboration in action. These experiences provided valuable insights into modern nursing and demonstrated how healthcare professionals worked together to deliver high-quality patient care. Yun Chen noted that contemporary nursing education extended beyond professional knowledge to include clinical practice, technological innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and humanistic care. She added that partnerships between universities and hospitals allowed students to engage with healthcare environments at an early stage and make more informed decisions about their future studies and careers.
In addition to the hospital tours, participants took part in hands-on training at the Clinical Skills Center, where they practiced basic wound suturing, experienced simulated clinical scenarios, and learned patient-care procedures. Under the guidance of instructors, students used simulation equipment to complete a variety of clinical tasks. The practical exercises not only enhanced their understanding of healthcare knowledge but also highlighted the observation, critical-thinking, communication, and teamwork skills required in clinical settings.
Many participants remarked that they had previously viewed nursing primarily as caring for patients. Through the camp, however, they discovered that nurses also played vital roles in clinical assessment, healthcare technology applications, and psychological support for patients. One participant shared that having a family member working in a hospital, combined with a personal interest in healthcare, had motivated participation in the program. The experience further strengthened the determination to pursue a career in nursing, particularly in the field of surgical care.
The camp concluded with a healthcare career forum featuring faculty members from the School of Nursing at Yuan Ze University and nursing administrators from Far Eastern Memorial Hospital. The speakers introduced the distinctive features of nursing education, discussed emerging trends in smart healthcare, and shared insights into future academic and career opportunities. Students also learned that nursing had expanded far beyond traditional bedside care to encompass fields such as smart healthcare, telehealth, health promotion, long-term care, research, and education.
The School of Nursing at Yuan Ze University stated that it would continue integrating the interdisciplinary resources of the College of Medicine and Nursing while strengthening partnerships with medical institutions such as Far Eastern Memorial Hospital. Through distinctive programs in smart healthcare, simulation-based education, and career exploration, the School aimed to build a talent-development platform that connected high school education, university studies, and clinical practice. The initiative was expected to help young people explore their aspirations and cultivate a new generation of nursing professionals equipped with expertise, compassion, and technological competence.
