Yuan Ze University International Volunteer Sharing Session Highlighted “Local Needs as the Core”

To broaden students’ global perspectives and deepen the spirit of service learning, Yuan Ze University held the “2025 International Volunteer Sharing Session” on the evening of September 17. The event invited faculty leaders and student volunteers who had served in Malaysia, northern Thailand, and other regions to share their first-hand experiences, attracting enthusiastic participation from students interested in cross-border service.

Through these authentic stories, participants gained a deeper understanding of what international volunteering truly entails on the frontlines. The session not only facilitated an exchange of experiences but also inspired students to reflect on the diverse values of “service” and imagine their own future involvement in international volunteer work.

During the event, volunteer teams introduced the programs they had designed for Malaysia and northern Thailand, which included educational tutoring, environmental protection, and cultural preservation. By adopting cross-disciplinary collaboration in their planning, the courses and services were more closely aligned with local needs, with the hope of delivering meaningful impact within a limited timeframe.

One volunteer shared an emotional reflection about an interactive program they had developed, stating, “The spirit of volunteering has never been about embellishment, but about offering help when it is most needed.” Another member described a change in mindset: “Before the trip, I only thought about what we could give to them. But after the service ended, I realized that their inspiration to me was far greater. Even in environments with limited resources, the children carried pure hope and kept striving. Their resilience taught me to cherish life, to treasure the present moment, and to value my family and friends even more.”

The session concluded with a lively Q&A exchange. Volunteers not only recounted their service experiences but also shared practical approaches to curriculum design, interdisciplinary collaboration, and local service arrangements. Attendees gained a clearer understanding of the scope of volunteer work and were reminded that international service was more than short-term participation—it fostered lasting commitment and responsibility. The discussion also emphasized that cross-cultural understanding and professional spirit were essential elements of global volunteering.

This event showcased the positive impact that youth could generate through social engagement and inspired more students to consider joining the ranks of international volunteers.
