YZU Computer Science and Engineering Wins Awards in Digital Application at the 23rd YS Award for Two Consecutive Years

A student team from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Yuan Ze University, supervised by Professor Ming-Yi Lin, achieved another outstanding result at the 23rd Yushan Cup Creative Competition, winning an Honorable Mention in the Digital Application Category. The achievement demonstrated the Departments strong capabilities in innovative applications and hands-on implementation in the fields of artificial intelligence and edge computing.

The award-winning project, titled Edge-Intelligent Traffic Sign Perception System with Robustness in Adverse Environments, was jointly developed by team leader Che-Chi Li and team members Yu-Chieh Huang, Chun-Hsien Shen, Chen-Pei Hsu, and Yu-Ju Chen. The project addressed the problem of reduced accuracy in existing traffic sign recognition systems under adverse conditions such as rain, fog, and low-light environments. To overcome these challenges, the team proposed a solution integrating edge computing with low-power hardware.

The system was built on an FPGA-based edge platform, combining image processing techniques with deep learning models. Even on resource-constrained devices, the system was able to maintain stable performance. Experimental results showed that the system achieved reliable recognition performance across various environmental conditions while featuring low latency and low power consumption. Compared with conventional solutions, the proposed system demonstrated greater practicality and application potential and could be widely applied in areas such as intelligent driving, smart cities, and traffic safety, with strong potential for commercialization.

The Yushan Cup Creative Competition is one of Taiwans most representative student innovation contests and has long been dedicated to cultivating young talents’ technological innovation capabilities and interdisciplinary integration skills. The 23rd edition of the competition adopted the theme, , echoing Taiwans strengths in artificial intelligence and computing technologies. The competition encouraged students to integrate professional knowledge with practical applications and explore the diverse values of technology in a future society. In addition to innovation and practicality, the judging criteria also emphasized overall presentation skills and on-site responsiveness, placing high demands on participants professional competence and teamwork abilities.
