The College of Management at Yuan Ze University announced the official inauguration of the Startup Garage, accompanied by the Startup Garage Showcase | Voice of Creativity presentation. The event featured co-creation projects guided by faculty members Huai-Chieh Chen and Yung-Ching Tseng, and brought together industry and academic experts from publishing, psychology, cultural and creative industries, and international academia.
Through cross-disciplinary dialogue and exchange, the event created an open space where students were encouraged to experiment, iterate, and put ideas into action.
The launch of the Startup Garage symbolized a significant upgrade in Yuan Ze University’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. The opening event demonstrated a high level of interdisciplinary energy, attracting a strong lineup of distinguished guests, including Wei-Jen Chen, a prominent scholar in publishing and entrepreneurship education, Po-Hsuen Cheng, a leading professor from the Department of Psychology at National Taiwan University, along with the College of Management faculty, Yu-Te Liu and Shin-Hung Chen.
Alumnus Yi-Hao Cheng, former manager of Suming and a driving force behind indigenous cultural initiatives and the "Moonlight Sea Concert," was also invited to return and share firsthand entrepreneurial insights.
The event further welcomed Chuo-Yu Tsai, professor from the School of Management at Binghamton University, State University of New York, along with student participant Michael Bronikowski. Experts from diverse backgrounds shared professional feedback on students’ business proposals, demonstrating broad commitment to cultivating the next generation of innovative talent.
As the first incubated cases under the Startup Garage model, two student teams received the inaugural Innovation Spirit Award from the College of Management. With precise guidance from their mentors, both teams showcased strong commercial potential.
Under the mentorship of Huai-Chieh Chen, the team Manlai Brew—comprised of Yu-Geng Lin, Chun-Yu Lu, Yu-Jung Hu, and Shih-Teng Yu—focused on global sustainability trends by transforming Mikania micrantha, commonly known as the invasive “green cancer,” into value-added alcoholic beverages. The team successfully developed a sustainable supply chain from ecological removal to green consumer products, embodying a zero-waste brand philosophy.
Under the guidance of Yung-Ching Tseng, the team Bone Seller—formed by Ting-Bo Wang, Shih-You-Chia Lin, and Yu-Hsiang Chen—blended indigenous culture with contemporary aesthetics by crafting legal animal-bone accessories. Their work positioned jewelry as a medium for cultural conversation. The team passed the Ministry of Education’s U-Start program and earned the Gold Award in the Taoyuan Design Awards, demonstrating strong capability in cultural translation.
Dean of the College of Management, Min-Ping Huang, stated:“The opening of the Startup Garage marked an important milestone in entrepreneurial education at Yuan Ze University. Through initiatives such as the Innovation Spirit Award, we encouraged students to explore boldly, embrace failure, and learn through practice. Whether in Manlai Brew’s commitment to environmental sustainability or Bone Seller’s dedication to cultural identity, both teams reflected the qualities we aim to cultivate—students who can solve complex problems and turn creative ideas into executable solutions.”
Looking ahead, the College of Management planned further to strengthen the Startup Garage as a hands-on entrepreneurial ecosystem. By breaking down traditional classroom boundaries and integrating the space with a robust mentor network, the initiative aimed to support students through the full innovation pipeline—from ideation and prototyping to business model validation. The program strived to foster an entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging students to cross disciplinary borders, apply academic knowledge to real-world challenges, and become the next generation of innovation-driven talent.
