YZU Computer Science and Engineering Students Won the Distinguished Award in a National Engineering Paper Competition

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Yuan Ze University achieved another remarkable accomplishment in the 114th Annual Engineering Paper Competition organized by the Student Chapter of the Chinese Institute of Engineers.

 A student team supervised by Professor Ming-Yi Lin earned the Distinguished Award in the Computer Science category for their research on embedded memory testing, demonstrating the department’s strong research capabilities in embedded systems and memory reliability.

The award-winning paper, jointly completed by Wei-Kuan Chiang, Chin-Hong Wang, Chen-Pei Hsu, and Che-Chi Li, was titled “Optimization of Embedded Memory Test Based on a BIST Architecture Using the March mSR+ Algorithm.” The research focused on high-speed, low-power embedded SRAM testing and proposed an integrated hardware architecture combining BIST (Built-In Self-Test) and BISR (Built-In Self-Repair). The team further incorporated an enhanced March mSR+ testing algorithm to improve fault detection capability and overall testing efficiency.

Wei-Kuan Chiang noted that the improved March mSR+ algorithm achieved an outstanding 32/36 coverage rate in detecting deceptive read destructive coupling faults (CFdrd), marking the best performance among existing March algorithms. The method not only demonstrated low total and dynamic power consumption but also offered high testing accuracy. Although the operation count of 22N was slightly higher than some simplified algorithms, the team successfully enhanced testing performance through parallel testing strategies in the RTL implementation, showcasing the maturity of integrating algorithms with hardware design.

Professor Ming-Yi Lin stated that the students were deeply involved in every stage—from system design and RTL architecture development to the full testing workflow—demonstrating strong initiative and professionalism. He believed that participating in national competitions helped students improve their research competence, presentation skills, and critical thinking, while also fostering innovative problem-solving abilities for engineering challenges.

In recent years, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Yuan Ze University has achieved outstanding results in areas such as intelligent systems, embedded technologies, AI applications, autonomous vehicles, and memory reliability. This award once again highlighted the department’s excellence in cultivating innovative talent.
