Yuan Ze University College of Management Hosted “The Mountain Makers” – Semiconductor Pioneer Chin-Tay Shih Discussed Leadership and Talent Vision

The College of Management at Yuan Ze University held a screening and forum titled “The Mountain Makers – A Dialogue on Technology, Strategy, and Vision” on the afternoon of November 1 in the Yan-Kung Hall.

The event featured Chin-Tay Shih, Chairman of the Pan Wen Yuan Foundation and one of the main figures in the documentary “The Mountain Makers – The Gamble of the Century,” along with Li-Wei Chen, CEO of the Industrial Technology Research Institute’s Industry Service Center. The event attracted enthusiastic participation from DBA and EMBA faculty, students, and industry professionals.

The event was hosted by Dean Min-Ping Huang, with Vice President Tze Chi Hsu and Vice President Chiuling Lu engaging in discussions centered on leadership and talent cultivation. Vice President Tze Chi Hsu highlighted that Yuan Ze University was preparing to establish a Semiconductor Center, integrating the strengths of the Colleges of Engineering, Electrical and Communication Engineering, and Management. The goal was to nurture a new generation of talents equipped with interdisciplinary thinking, integrative abilities, and a global vision. He sought Mr. Shih’s insights on how universities could respond to industry needs and cultivate innovative leaders in the AI era.

Chairman Chin-Tay Shih reflected on his personal background, sharing how growing up in an environment that valued both freedom and discipline helped him develop independent thinking. He emphasized that in the age of AI, leaders must adopt a mindset of preparing for the future and continually learning to meet new challenges. He also pointed out that “talent should not be confined to the semiconductor field but should transcend disciplines,” calling on enterprises and academia to collaborate in cultivating innovative talents with interdisciplinary perspectives.

In response to an audience question about concerns over TSMC’s overseas expansion and the potential outflow of talent, Mr. Shih remarked, “As long as people are here, technology will be here,” a statement that resonated strongly with attendees. He stressed that education and environment were the true keys to retaining talent. Meanwhile, Li-Wei Chen suggested that Taiwan should shift from a manufacturing mindset to a design mindset, using creativity and differentiation to drive industrial upgrading.

The event concluded with a symbolic signing ceremony for the DBA program, titled “The Cradle of Mountain-Making Research,” representing the mission of passing down industrial spirit and cultivating the next generation of leaders. Mei-Sen Peng, Deputy Director at Powertech Technology Inc. and an EMBA alumnus and DBA student, donated a silicon wafer to Yuan Ze University and invited Chairman Chin-Tay Shih to sign it, leaving a meaningful mark on this cross-generational dialogue between academia and industry.
