On April 24, 2025, Cheng-Yu Cheng, General Manager of Far Eastern New Century (FENC), was invited to Yuan Ze University to give a lecture as part of an interdisciplinary general education course. Titled “Building a Sustainable Business Model: A Case Study of Far Eastern New Century,” the talk provided students and faculty with practical insights into corporate sustainability practices.
In his opening remarks, President Ching-Jung Liao emphasized the university’s goal of integrating group resources with campus education and research to build an educational platform that fosters both talent development and technological innovation in sustainability.
Inspired by the lecture, an interdisciplinary student team consisting of Yi-An Chen (junior, Department of Electrical Engineering), Yu-Hsuan Cheng (senior, Department of Mechanical Engineering), Hsi-Yen Kuo (junior, Department of International Business), and Chun-Wei Chang (junior, Department of Information Communication), created a poster project titled “Kicking Toward the Future, Wearing Sustainability.” The project was featured in a course-wide poster exhibition and demonstrated their understanding and support of Far Eastern Group’s green textile vision.
The team expressed that Far Eastern New Century’s long-term commitment to low-carbon transformation and the circular economy has earned international recognition. Through their poster, they aimed to communicate how the company integrates AI applications with the strengths of Taiwan’s industrial supply chain to achieve a global vision of sustainability.
In terms of design, the poster used a natural green background to symbolize ecological cycles and cultural harmony. It incorporated eco-friendly imagery such as PET bottles, plastic bags, carbon footprints, and sustainability certifications, aligning with the concept of “transforming plastic into global sustainable materials.” The design also highlighted sneakers and sports jerseys, reflecting the connection between sporting goods and textile technologies discussed in the lecture, and reinforcing the creative themes of “kicking” and “wearing.”
The students also shared how the project’s title, “Kicking Toward the Future, Wearing Sustainability,” was chosen through group discussion. They felt it was both concise and imaginative, and hoped it could one day be adopted as a promotional slogan for FENC’s sustainable products, helping to shape a strong brand identity.
Through their research and literature review, the students—who had initially thought environmental topics might be dull—found themselves intrigued by the real-world examples and innovative perspectives they encountered. This process broadened their understanding of green industrial transformation and the multifaceted practices of sustainability.
Despite it being their first time collaborating across different departments and year levels, all four students agreed that the experience was highly rewarding. They were able to apply their strengths, communicate effectively, and allocate tasks strategically to produce a design that was both creative and insightful. They expressed special gratitude to Professor Feng-Ying Hu of the General Education Center for her patient guidance throughout the process.
This exhibition not only highlighted the students’ commitment to sustainability and their creative potential but also reflected the close ties between Yuan Ze University and the Far Eastern Group. Through this industry-academic collaboration, students gained valuable insights into the intersection of corporate responsibility, campus vision, and personal growth, and looked forward to continued joint efforts in shaping a greener future.
