As Christmas approached, students from the International Bachelor Program in Strategic Communication, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Yuan Ze University, visited Baosheng Elementary School in Guanyin District, Taoyuan City, to host their annual “Christmas English Activity.”
Through fun and educational activities, the event brought laughter, warmth, and a festive spirit to rural schoolchildren, while filling the campus with a vibrant atmosphere of international exchange.
The event attracted enthusiastic participation from students of many nationalities, including those from Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Mongolia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, the Kingdom of Eswatini, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Haiti. Working together, the international students engaged closely with the children, not only broadening the pupils’ global perspectives but also infusing the campus with rich cultural diversity. For the university students, the service-learning experience proved especially meaningful, allowing them to develop cross-cultural communication skills and gain hands-on experience in English teaching through real interaction and practice.
Centered on the Christmas theme, the program featured a series of interactive English activities. The “Musical Passing Game” quickly brought participants closer together through music and movement. “Christmas Bingo” incorporated Christmas-related English vocabulary, enabling children to learn English naturally through play. Meanwhile, the “Christmas Tree Craft” activity encouraged students to draw and decorate their own Christmas trees, fostering creativity and self-expression. Laughter filled the air throughout the event, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere.
A student surnamed Yato from Japan shared that the children’s natural curiosity toward different languages and cultures deeply impressed him, allowing him to truly feel the power of cultural exchange while broadening his own international outlook. A student surnamed Hsi from the Kingdom of Eswatini noted that celebrating Christmas with the children was a rare and deeply moving cross-cultural experience. A student surnamed Hu from Vietnam reflected that the activity showed him that cultural differences did not hinder communication; with companionship, patience, and interaction, it was possible to bring joy and confidence to children.
He also learned how to communicate with young learners and collaborate with volunteers from diverse cultural backgrounds. A student surnamed Tso from Indonesia shared that the children showed great curiosity about Christmas and foreign cultures, and through mutual translation and understanding, language became a bridge for meaningful connection.
At the conclusion of the event, Yuan Ze University students presented each child with a handmade beaded bracelet, offering a warm and heartfelt ending to the teaching service. Many children happily expressed how much they enjoyed playing games and learning English with their international “brothers and sisters,” and said they looked forward to meeting them again in the future.
Chin-Fu Chen, Director of the International Bachelor Program in Strategic Communication, stated that the “Christmas English Activity” had been continuously held since 2019, and that the 2025 event marked its seventh year. The program demonstrated students’ long-term commitment to serving rural communities and fulfilling the university’s social responsibility. He added that the program would continue to integrate English education with multicultural elements, promote educational and service initiatives that give back to society, strengthen connections between the university and local communities, and cultivate outstanding talents with a global vision and a strong sense of social responsibility.
