To further deepen academic exchange between Taiwan and Korea, Professor Woo‑Seon Shin, Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies at Pusan National University (PNU), visited the Department of Chinese Linguistics and Literature at Yuan Ze University in December 2025.
The Institute of Chinese Studies is a first‑tier academic research center at Pusan National University, bringing together scholars specializing in Chinese studies and long dedicated to interdisciplinary research and the regular organization of academic activities. Professor Shin also taught in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Pusan National University and was a well‑known scholar in language and cultural studies in Korea.
During the visit, Professor Shin delivered two academic keynote lectures titled “The Principles Behind the Creation of Hunminjeongeum and Chinese Language Textbooks in the Joseon Dynasty” and “Research on the Original Forms of Sino‑Korean Vocabulary.” The lectures offered in‑depth explorations of the historical contexts and academic achievements related to Korean linguistic culture and Chinese language studies. Combining strong theoretical grounding with a cross‑cultural comparative perspective, the talks attracted a large audience of faculty members and students and generated enthusiastic interaction, with lively questions and discussions.
Professor Shin also participated in an academic roundtable discussion with faculty members from Yuan Ze University’s Department of Chinese Linguistics and Literature, during which both sides exchanged views on future directions for teaching and research collaboration. During the meeting, the Department of Chinese Linguistics and Literature, Yuan Ze University, and the Institute of Chinese Studies, Pusan National University, formally signed an academic cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU). The agreement expressed a shared commitment to advancing substantive collaboration in areas such as joint research projects, academic conferences, and faculty and student exchanges.
The Department of Chinese Linguistics and Literature noted that under the leadership of President Ching‑Jung Liao, Yuan Ze University had achieved notable results in internationalization, and the Department had actively engaged in international academic collaboration. Over the past two years, interactions between the Department and Pusan National University had intensified. In addition to an existing MOU with Pusan National University’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the two institutions had also planned a one‑year graduate student exchange program to commence in the 2026 academic year. Professor Shin’s visit not only deepened academic dialogue in the fields of Chinese language, literature, and cultural studies but also laid a more solid foundation for future cross‑institutional and cross‑national collaboration.
