An American Professor’s Impressions of Yuan Ze University

This was my first impression of Yuan Ze University.

I was invited to give a talk on EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction), PBL (Problem-Based Learning), and internationalization. The car passed through the bright university gate and drove along an elegant tree-lined path towards a fortress-like concrete building. I asked my host, “Are all the buildings on campus this beautiful?” My colleague responded, “Most of them are. The buildings here often win awards. Impressive, right?” Honestly, I felt a bit embarrassed because I knew little about Yuan Ze University and Taoyuan, aside from the airport, delicious Hakka cuisine, large shopping malls, and the Rakuten baseball team.
