Yuan Ze University Hosted the Yuan Ze Cup Debate Competition, with Students Engaging in Lively Debates on Limits to AI Development

To cultivate students’ global perspectives and critical thinking skills, Yuan Ze University held the “Global Vision × Future Thinking” Yuan Ze Cup International Current Affairs Debate Competition on May 1. The event attracted students from different colleges and academic years, who formed interdisciplinary teams to participate.

The debate topic focused on whether humanity should proactively limit the development of artificial intelligence to avoid losing control over the future, highlighting students’ strong awareness of and engagement with global technological issues.

The competition was organized by the Office of Global Affairs at Yuan Ze University and co-organized by the Taiwan Yuan Ze Cultural and Creative Association. Supported by donations from former President Chung-Ping Peng, the event had been held continuously for many years. It was dedicated to fostering a culture of international issue-oriented debate on campus. The competition adopted the Singapore-style four-on-four team debate format, with preliminary rounds, the third-place match, and the championship round all completed within a single day. The schedule was intensive, and the exchanges were dynamic and highly competitive.

The panel of judges comprised experts from both academia and professional practice, including former Vice President of Yuan Ze University Li-Wen Wang, Executive Director Chiu-Yu Wu of the Modern CEO Confucian Studies Center at the Chinese Enterprise Research Institute, Associate Director Chia-Yu Pi of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at Yuan Ze University, former Ambassador Sheng-Kuan Tu of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, former Director of the Division of Continuing Education at Yuan Ze University Ming-Te Feng, and Professor Chor-Kheng Lim, Chair of the Department of Art and Design. The judges conducted comprehensive evaluations based on the depth of argumentation, on-the-spot responsiveness, teamwork, and overall performance, and provided professional feedback after the debates.

After multiple rounds of intense debate, the championship was claimed by the “Fresh Liver” team, composed of first-year students from the Department of Information Management and the Department of International Business. The runner-up position was awarded to the “Aspiring Freedom, Intelligent Participation” team, formed by senior students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The third-place honor went to the interdisciplinary team “Twenty Thousand of Us.” The Best Debater Award was presented to Ying-Chu Shen, a student from the Department of Information Management.

Yun-Chia Liang, EN-US, chief of International Affairs at the Office of Global Affairs, stated that through international current affairs debate competitions, the University aimed to help students deepen their understanding of global issues through rational dialogue and the exchange of diverse perspectives, while also enhancing their communication and public discourse skills. She added that Yuan Ze University would continue to integrate resources to create a learning environment that fostered global vision and critical thinking.
