Yuan Ze University Overseas Chinese Students Joined a Beach Cleanup in Yehliu, Deepening Environmental Awareness and Cultural Experience

The Military Education Office of Yuan Ze University led 40 overseas Chinese students from various countries to Yehliu Geopark to take part in an “Environmental Protection Beach Cleanup Activity.” Surrounded by lush greenery and spectacular coastal scenery, students learned about environmental protection through hands-on action and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of marine ecosystem conservation.

During the activity, students collected discarded bottles, plastic fragments, and marine debris along the coastline. Through direct participation, they became aware of the ecological damage caused by marine waste and realized that environmental protection required long-term commitment and collective effort. The Military Education Office noted that the cleanup not only allowed international students to step outside the classroom and experience Taiwan’s natural beauty but also provided opportunities to practice public service, further fostering students’ sense of social participation and responsibility.

After completing the cleanup mission, faculty and students visited Keelung Miaokou Night Market to enjoy a wide variety of local cuisine. Through food and cultural experiences, students developed a deeper appreciation of Taiwan’s hospitality and daily life culture, strengthening their understanding of local customs and traditions.

The Military Education Office pointed out that by combining the Yehliu beach cleanup with a visit to Keelung Miaokou Night Market, the activity not only enhanced students’ awareness of environmental protection issues but also created opportunities for cross-cultural exchange. The experience helped international students relieve academic stress, promoted diverse learning, and deepened emotional connections among participants.

Chia-Ling Lee, President of the Overseas Chinese Student Association and a third-year student in the International Bachelor Program in Informatics, shared that the cleanup activity made her truly realize that “environmental protection is not just a concept in textbooks, but something everyone can take action on.” She added that while cleaning the environment, overseas Chinese students also encouraged visitors at Yehliu to practice waste sorting and proper disposal. “We should step outdoors, share our enthusiasm, and do our part to protect Taiwan’s beautiful coastline,” she said.

Yuan Ze University stated that it would continue to plan more activities that allowed international students to deeply experience Taiwan’s natural environment and social culture, to create a more welcoming and diverse campus environment.
