In the 2026 CommonWealth Magazine University Civic Engagement Awards, Yuan Ze University was awarded second place in the Large Private Universities category. The University was also selected for the University Presidents’ Peer Evaluation on Institutional Performance, highlighting broad recognition of its overall achievements in social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and educational impact.

Ching-Jung Liao, President of Yuan Ze University, stated that this recognition was not merely an accumulation of achievements, but also a reminder of the evolving role of universities. He emphasized that universities should not only cultivate talent, but also nurture individuals capable of taking action in response to future challenges. He further noted that Yuan Ze University had long promoted sustainability by transforming ideals into institutional frameworks and embedding them into daily operations, making sustainability an integral part of campus culture.

From the perspective of teaching and learning, Yuan Ze University indicated that more than 90 percent of its courses across the University had already been aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through cross-college integration and faculty learning communities, the University had strengthened students’ interdisciplinary learning and practical competencies, helping transform sustainability from an abstract concept into core competencies that could be learned and practiced.

In terms of campus governance and environmental sustainability, Yuan Ze University had implemented the ISO 50001 Energy Management System and the ISO 14064-1 Greenhouse Gas Inventory mechanism, establishing a comprehensive framework for energy and carbon management. The University had also continuously promoted the replacement of energy-saving equipment and improvements in energy efficiency in order to reduce overall energy consumption and carbon emissions.

In addition, the University emphasized support measures for members of the campus community, including initiatives to enhance the physical and mental well-being and career development of faculty and staff, improve internal communication, and strengthen administrative and daily-life support for international faculty and students in order to promote cross-cultural exchange. For students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the University had provided scholarships, grants, and academic counseling to reduce the impact of financial factors on their learning experiences.

With regard to social engagement, Yuan Ze University had long been committed to local development in Taoyuan through its University Social Responsibility (USR) projects. By integrating culture, industry, and community needs, the University had promoted local revitalization initiatives and introduced applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen the linkage between learning and real-world practice, thereby expanding the University’s social impact.

Yuan Ze University further noted that being included in the University Presidents’ Peer Evaluation on Institutional Performance also reflected its steady progress in institutional governance and development strategies, earning recognition from peers in higher education. Looking ahead, the University stated that it would continue to deepen its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility through institutionalized governance and cross-disciplinary integration, further expanding its impact on society.
